ÜBERLEBEN IM STEINZEIT-CAMP
01.09.2025
For more than thirty years Paläotechnik offers an intensive engagement with prehistoric material culture, living history and heritage interpretation - in theory and practice.
Our archaeotechnical work focuses on European prehistory- from the late Paleolithic to the Neolithic. Archaeological evidence supplemented by ethnographic data allow for a fact-based reconstruction
of stone age material culture.
Animal skin processing and tanning technology, as well as related fields like garment production and sewing technology. belong to our core competences.
Paläotechink offers detailed know-how in producing prehistoric replicas and authentic clothing.
Our expertise is valued by private individuals, film productions, museums, and other institutions.
Workshops, presentations, Living History events and lectures facilitate the transfer of knowledge on prehistoric technology and stone age living to the general public and professionals alike.
As an author, my books and articles have been published in several languages.

Paläotechnik conveys expertise in Prehistoric Heritage Interpretation, focussing on stone age living and ancient technology, especially leather and fur processing.
Extensive Living History presentations, practical courses, coachings and lectures are aimed at museums, universities and schools. We are adressing professionals as well as the general public, incorporating up to date archaeological evidence as well as ethnographic data..
Related subject areas include the production of bone and antler tools, hunting economy, animal processing, flint tool manufacture, fire making and other ancient skills.
During Living History events, our extensive stock of material culture items allows us to present an authenic, lively and broad picture of
European stone age culture.
We are crafting a wide range of prehistoric material culture
artifacts and replicas.
These include bone, horn and antler artifacts, ground stone and flint implements, archery equippment, spearthrowers, other weaponry and projectile objects. Furthermore items manufactured from bark and fiber, as well as prehistoric ceramics ... and much more.
We offer detailed reproductions of archaeological originals, from the Upper Palaeolithic to the beginning of the Chalcolithic.
These include replicas of Paleoplithic sculptural figurines made from mammoth ivory and jet, Palaeoinuit replicas and Neolithic antler and bone adornment.
The following is a selection of institutuons
that used our props and replicas:
- Pinewood Film Studios (UK, 2024) "Here" with Tom Hanks
- Museum zu Allerheiligen Schaffhausen (CH, 2020)
- Museum für Urgeschichte Zug (CH, 2019)
- Federseemuseum, Bad Buchau (D, 2010)
- Pfahlbaumuseum, Unteruhldingen (D, 2011)

Taking into account direct and indirect archaeological evidence as well as thnographic data we fashion prehistorc costume from faunal materials such as leather and fur.. Our hides come mostly from wild animal procured through local, sustainable hunts, as well as from game farmers. They are tanned using only natural materials.
Designed, patterned and decorated in great detail, they enable us to a"dress" a varied engagement with prehistory and hunter-gatherer cultures.
Sewn by hand with bone tools, leather thong, natural sinew, horsehair, gut, or plant fibres, all products offer ideal functionality and an authentic and individualistic appearance.
The pieces are created for:
- Private individuals
- Museum collections
- Exhibitions / Film
- Historical Reenactment
Inspired by and based on:
- Prehistoric Archaeology
- North American Ethnology
- Circumpolar indigenous cultures
as well as contemporary design.
Tanning courses and seminars, in which natural tanning can be learned, are aimed at individuals or small groups.
We practice and teach tanning with alum, fat- and smoke ( braintanning) as well as vegetable tanning.
During my one-day tutorials participants are led through all the different stages of the tanning process., in theory and practice.
They will learn what is necessary to produce different kinds of leather ,from wonderfully soft buckskin to dense and durable bark tan.
Three day workshops are designed to teach participants the art of braintanning from start to finishis including soaking, scraping, softeing and smoking hides The result is a soft finished buckskin or fur for each of them to take home.
Individual counseling and consultation, related to all aspects of prehistoric and natural animal skin preparation , is also offered via telephone or video conference.
Course dates are listed under "Calendar" or please contact me directly.
A variety of traditionally tanned buckskin and furs are available upon request. 100% handmade, 100% natural

Since 2015 I have been sharing my experience in building bows in compact, one-day classes for beginners.
Participants are crafting fully functional bows from natural wood, mostly ash, working with the simplest of tools such as axes, knives and rasps. A hand-twisted bowstring is provided. The class will end with an instruction of handling and shooting the new weapon.
In a small group we work outdoors to produce a hybrid form between long- and flat bow.
Dates are listed under "Calendar" or please contact me directly.
